Clinic Details

Background

Since our founding, The Flying Samaritans at UCR have been visiting our student-run free clinic in El Hongo, a rural community located just outside Tecate, Mexico. This clinic is a vital resource for a community that faces significant barriers to healthcare access.

The building we use is generously provided by the local community and serves as a multi-functional space throughout the month. When we are not running the clinic, the space is used for other support services that strengthen the community.

Our clinic is equipped with:

  • A pharmacy stocked with donated medications and medical supplies

  • A waiting area, two examination rooms, and one dental service room

  • Supplies for taking vital signs and basic health assessments

Location

El Hongo is a small, tight-knit community where many residents face food insecurity and limited access to medical care. The community relies heavily on government support, and families often help each other to make ends meet when resources run low. The clinic is centrally located, providing easy access to those who need it most.

What We Do in El Hongo

Our clinic provides:

  • Free Medical and Dental Consultations: Patients receive care from licensed healthcare professionals and student volunteers. Our dental team offers oral screenings and a range of dental treatments, including cleanings, fillings, and extractions, using portable equipment on-site.

  • Medications and Supplies: We distribute donated medications and basic medical supplies to those in need.

  • Community Support and Donations: We bring donations to support the community and foster lasting relationships with residents.

  • Orphanage Visits: A subset of our volunteers also visits a nearby orphanage to engage in fun activities with the children and create a positive and joyful experience for them.

Through our efforts, we aim to not only provide immediate medical assistance but also promote long-term health education and community empowerment.

Our Services

Each of these areas offers unique opportunities to make a tangible difference and create lasting connections with the community.

  • Our medical team offers free consultations, health assessments, and basic treatments to patients. Volunteers assist healthcare providers, take vitals, and help ensure smooth patient flow throughout the clinic day.

  • Our dental team provides essential dental treatments, including cleanings, fillings, and extractions, alongside oral hygiene education. We are equipped with a portable electric dental unit, a digital X-ray unit with sensor, and a designated sterilization area to ensure safe and efficient care delivery. Volunteers assist licensed dental professionals by preparing supplies, maintaining the operatory, and providing chairside support during procedures.

  • The optometry team conducts vision screenings and distribute donated prescription glasses to those in need. Volunteers assist with vision tests and help match patients with appropriate eyewear.

  • A subset of our volunteers visits a nearby orphanage to engage with the children. Activities include playing games, organizing fun events, and bringing joy to the kids through positive interactions and companionship.

  • We bring donations of clothing, toiletries, non-perishable food items, and medical supplies to distribute to the community. Volunteers help organize and distribute these items to ensure they reach those who need them most.
